Hiking Trails in Our Area

Jonathan Dickinson State Park

This trail consists of two loops with almost a mile of trail as a connector. The trail totals about 18 miles and traverses a variety of terrain, but primarily goes through sand pine scrub and pine flatwoods. During the rainy season you may have to wade in places. This trail has a campsite for backpackers on each of the two loops. Reservations are provided to a limited number of people on a first come, first served basis. Pets, bicycles, firearms, and motorized equipment are prohibited on this trail.

The first loop is ideal for a day hike of approximately four to five hours. The park is located in Hobe Sound, and is open from 8:00 a.m. to sunset, or when the park is full. For more information, please call (561) 546-2771.

Dupuis Reserve

The hiking trails in Dupuis have been developed in a stacked loop (four loops) system offering hikers a choice of hikes ranging from 4.3 to 15.5 miles. Extensive areas may be wet during the rainy season, and hog rootings may make certain trail reaches somewhat strenuous to walk. Two campsites exist for overnight use (permit required).

The hiking trails in Dupuis connect to the Corbett Wildlife Management Area on the east and will connect in the future to the Lake Okeechobee Section of the Florida National Scenic Trail in the west. The trailhead/parking area is located off SR-76, approximately six miles west of its junction with SR-710 at Indiantown. More detailed information is available from the South Florida Water Management District in West Palm Beach. For more information please call (561) 686-8800.

Corbett Wildlife Management Area

The hiking trail in Corbett is approximately 14 miles long, beginning from the Everglades Youth Camp and extending westward toward the Dupuis Reserve. There are two designated campsites along the Corbett Trail. The trailhead/parking area near the everglades Youth Camp is eastern terminus and can be reached from Seminole/Pratt Road. Take Seminole/ Pratt approximately 12 miles north of Southern Blvd., or take North Lake Blvd west off of SR-710 to Seminole/Pratt and then go north to the youth camp. There is a lot of plant and terrain diversity in this trail, but you must be prepared to get your feet wet. The western terminus is only reachable by trail from the Dupuis Reserve. A Wildlife Management Area permit is required to hike in Florida's management areas. For more information please call (561) 625-5122.

Lake Okeechobee Segment of the Florida National Scenic Trail

This trail exists on the Herbert Hoover Dike that goes all the way around Lake Okeechobee (approximately 110 miles) and is accessible from many locations. At most access areas there is plenty of parking. This trail is noted as an ideal place to view all of South Florida's agriculture, as well as bird and animal life. Ten locations have been designated around the lake as campsites, should you decide to overnight hike.

For more information on hiking this area, contact the Florida Trail Association or the US Army Corps of Engineers in Clewiston.

Other Trails

Other trails are planned in the McArthur Slough area to connect the Jonathan Dickinson trail with the Corbett Trail. Eventually you will be able to hike from the coast to Lake Okeechobee, and then connect with the north/south trail to North Florida, and maybe to the Appalachian Trail to Maine and beyond.
